12/18/2023 0 Comments Copperhead or eastern milksnakeThe milksnake, which has smooth scales, is a long, narrow snake and can grow to over a metre in length, although most individuals are much smaller. Despite its size, it still had a nice red and white coloration to it. This snake has a white and black chequered belly and usually has a distinct Y- or V-shaped mark on the back of its head. Finally, the grand finale of the evening was a nice looking adult eastern milk snake. The more colorfully marked snakes look similar to the copperhead, although the two are distinguishable: the copperhead is more, well, coppery, and has dark. The milksnake has smooth scales while the copperhead has keeled scales (raised ridge along the center of each scale). Then I saw three northern black racers all under the same piece of cover. The copperhead has only one row of crossbands down its heavy body in contrast to the milksnake's 3 to 5 rows of blotches down a slender body. The belly has a checkered pattern in gray and black. Afterwards, I saw the same eastern copperhead I saw at this location on May 30th, in close to the same spot. The eastern milksnake, northern watersnake, and eastern hog-nosed snake are often confused with the copperhead and needlessly killed.
